Insight

As The Freebie Guy prepared for the development of a native mobile app, it engaged Click Here Labs to stabilize and optimize its existing WordPress platform. Years of accumulated technical debt had begun impacting reliability, scalability, and ongoing maintenance. Before the initial migration to WP Engine, the site experienced frequent downtime. Although the migration provided a much more stable hosting environment, unresolved technical debt continued to affect performance during high-traffic periods, making a comprehensive optimization initiative the logical next step.

Idea

Click Here Labs executed a phased optimization initiative designed to modernize infrastructure, reduce operational risk, and create a scalable foundation for future growth. The team began with a full audit of plug-ins, hosting infrastructure, media storage, and performance benchmarks before systematically removing unnecessary plug-ins, eliminating conflicting caching layers, cleaning up legacy code, and optimizing the database. The largest component of the project was a complex media offload migration using WP Offload Media, DigitalOcean Spaces, and Cloudflare CDN delivery. To reduce deployment risk on such a large, high-traffic site, the team implemented a staging-first migration strategy with automated broken-image validation, API and endpoint testing, rollback safeguards, and post-launch monitoring. The team also developed custom plug-ins and GraphQL extensions to support future scalability and streamline ongoing content management and administrative workflows.

Impact

The optimization transformed the platform into a significantly leaner, faster, and more maintainable ecosystem prepared for future expansion. Production media storage was reduced from more than 500GB to approximately 17GB, dramatically improving infrastructure efficiency while reducing backup and restore times from hours to roughly three minutes. The reduction in storage and server overhead also positioned the client to lower hosting costs and operate on a far more scalable infrastructure. Media delivery performance improved through global CDN edge caching, Lighthouse scores saw measurable double-digit improvements, and front-end responsiveness improved across the website. Automated testing systems increased confidence in future deployments, while the optimization work substantially improved platform reliability during high-traffic periods. Most importantly, the project established the stable technical foundation needed to support The Freebie Guy’s future native app and continued platform growth.
